Beckenham Festival 20/10/2013

This weekend we took our Under 15 girls to Beckenham for a Club Development festival where clubs from Kent, Sussex, Surrey & Essex joined forces to create mixed teams to play a tournament.

Amy, Thea, Coral, Flora, Gemma and Georgina came along and we joined forces with Medway and Colchester to form a 17 strong squad and the girls then played 3 games of 13-a-side full contact rugby.

As this was a development festival the referee advised that he would not be whistling for every technical error or infringement and that the idea was to get the girls playing some good flowing rugby. He was true to his word and the girls went on to enjoy three excellent games.

The first match against Aylsford was understandably a slightly nervy game with many players struggling to work out where they should be standing on the pitch but their attacking and defensive abilities ensured an entertaining game that ended one try apiece. By the time that the second game started the girls had made huge progress and they played some excellent rugby to beat Uckfield 5-0 despite the match being played in torrential rain - and Amy managed to score two tries from Scrum Half. By now the girls were getting a much better idea of where to be on the pitch and also some great insight into which positions they prefer / have the abilities for.

Th girls final game was played against Pulborough who were clearly a much sterner test but by now the girls were really getting into their stride and they managed a 3-1 win Gemma scoring a try and Amy getting her third of the day.

All in all an excellent day out that I think the girls really enjoyed and thanks also to the parents for braving some shocking weather.

Well done girls I was very proud indeed of the way you played and represented the club, thank you.

15th December Update

Wednesday will see the girls taking their last training session of the year and following straight on from this there will be the Ladies & Girls (plus partners, parents etc) CHRISTMAS PARTY at 7.30pm. Training for the girls and the ladies resumes on Jan 8th and then the girls are at the Camberley Pitch-Up-&-Play on Jan 12th.

On Sunday Amy & Flora played in the inaugural Quins Girls trophy and had a great day out. With only two girls available we had to borrow to make up a BaaBaa's team but Dorking were brilliant with many of their girls really keen to help us out and Grasshoppers & Sutton & Epsom were also very generous by lending us players when required. Technically we came second but due to the fact that we had used everyone else's players we happily agreed that Sutton & Epsom should take the second place trophy - the winners were Grasshoppers who played some excellent Tag rugby.

Amy & Flora acquitted themselves brilliantly, both of them scoring tries and I think having a lot of fun.

surrey girlsGirls' rugby in Surrey has seen a new RFU Pitch up and Play initiative which provides an alternative to league rugby and ensures that girls have regular competitive playing opportunities at club, school and college level without the need to travel too far.
