Ladies and Girls at ORRFC

Welcome to Ladies and Girls Rugby at Old Reigatian RFC

We cater for all abilities and aim to run both Touch Rugby and Contact Rugby so you get to choose how physical your involvement will be. For those just looking for fun and fitness then our Touch Rugby sessions are great fun and many Reigate mums have discovered that Touch Rugby is a great alternative to the other fitness classes that are available - and a great social occasion as well. For those looking for the more physical challenges that contact rugby offers we are gradually building up this element and recently had the current England Ladies Scrum Half and an ex England Ladies number 8 come along to a training session to show us what contact rugby is all about.

The girls train at the club on Sunday mornings at 10.00am and all girls from school year 6 up to year 12 will be warmly welcomed at training sessions and no prior experience of rugby is necessary.

The Ladies (the age range so far is 16 to over 50) train on Wednesdays from 7.30pm until about 9.00pm following which the bar is open for a post-training drink. The combination of fun and fitness that Rugby represents has proved to be a great success.

So, to all Ladies and Girls out there - please come down and just give it a go, it really will be a lot of fun – and to all of the men reading this, please encourage all the women in your life to come down and join in.

The history behind this great addition to the club

According to the RFU "Women's rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Women's clubs have increased significantly over the past two decades, growing from approximately 2,000 players in 1988 to 8,000 by 1998, and to near 15,000 players in 2008."

At Old Reigatians we are hoping that we can harness the enthusiasm for this rapidly growing sport and gradually build teams to compete against the other clubs in the region with Ladies & Girls sections - but most importantly we are aiming to help girls and ladies from the local area to have fun.

Our aim is to start very gently with Tag / Touch rugby (i.e. no tackling) so that any girls and ladies can join in and experience the joys of the game but with a significantly reduced chance of getting hurt - in essence our training sessions consist of jogging / running around with a rugby ball but in teams and with the chance to score a Try.

This exciting new venture formally kicked off on March 17th 2013 when we held 'Ladies Day' with a Pitch-Up-And-Play session for the Under 13's and a general appeal to local girls and ladies for all ages groups over 13.

We had about 30 girls / ladies come along and, despite the very wet and cold conditions, a great time was had by all. Our thanks particularly went to the Old Reigatians Bar & Kitchen girls who joined in with great enthusiasm and had an excellent time. Generally I think the poor weather actually added to the day and the mud slide in the puddles at the end of the session was testament to the fun that I think everyone had.

The great news is that we had enough support to start both girls and Ladies groups at the club and these have gone from strength to strength.
